Mindfulness meditation has been practiced for 2500 years as part of the Buddhist spiritual path to reduce suffering and increase happiness. Since its introduction to this country, mindfulness meditation has been practiced as a means of reducing pain and stress, improving moods and relationships, and facilitating spiritual development. This 3-week introductory course, intended for those with no previous meditation experience, will offer basic instruction in a variety of meditation practices, including sitting meditation, walking meditation, mindful eating, and mindful communication. These practices will be taught in the context of basic Buddhist teachings on the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. Each session of the course will include a short talk, group discussion, and meditation practices. Participants are asked to attend all three sessions and to make a sincere commitment to devote 30 minutes per day to meditation practice at home.
Materials fee (for book, CD, and handouts): $15.00.
Dana: Traditionally, Buddhist teachings are considered priceless and so are given freely as a form of dana, or generosity. This course is also offered in the spirit of dana. At the end of the course, participants will have the opportunity to offer voluntary donations.
